Ten Night / Eleven Day 4x4 Self-Drive Safari

Moremi Game Reserve & Chobe National Park

Next departure: Taking bookings for 2025

Overview

Satisfaction Guaranteed

A hosted self-drive 4x4 safari tour through two of Botswana's most famous reserves, the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, followed by an optional crowning visit to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
This trip is the best and most authentic way to experience the African wilderness. If you want to see Lions as they roamed the plains centuries ago, or Elephants as they follow ancient migratory routes, then this trip if you you! There are no fences in these game reserves meaning the animals are able to roam as they please, including through your camp.

What To Expect

Committed to Quality

By day, you will be in command of your own 4x4 vehicle navigating the at times tretcherous roads of the African wilderness where your fellow road users are animals or the seasonal floods of the Okavango Delta. By night you will be camping in a tent atop your 4x4 vehicle in designated campsites but without fences - meaning that a midnight dash to the ablutions is strongly inadvisable.
This trip is rough and rugged and days are long. You can expect to be up before dawn everyday and ready to crash not long after sunset. If you love the outdoors, camping, and do not mind a bit of dirt under your fingernails, then book now!

Testimonial

Phil & Jess, August 2017

"There were far too many epic moments on this trip to run through them all here. Our time in Botswana was absolutely magical. We saw four of Africa’s “Big Five” animals, with the Rhino all-but extinct in Botswana these days (a fact we also learned on our trip). We witnessed a mother Leopard playing with her cubs, and then deciding to head out for a hunt, taking the route within the 4ft between our 4x4 trucks. There were more Lions than you could count - even adorable Lion cubs crossing a river! We saw so many amazingly powerful Elephants - they often had a penchant for getting a little too close for comfort!

Days 1 & 2

You will arrive in Maun by air at around 1 pm after catching a connecting flight from Johannesburg's international airport, O.R. Tambo.
You will be met at the airport by your host and transported to your accommodation. The afternoon is for you to do as you please as you settle into Africa and let the stress drain away.
Early on Day 2, you will be given your fully equipped 4x4 vehicles - these will be your transport and your homes for the duration of your safari. Once the vehicle handover is complete, you will head into the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta is a vast inland river delta in northern Botswana. It is known for its sprawling grassy plains, which flood seasonally, becoming a lush animal habitat.
Within the Okavango Delta, the first stop is the Moremi Game Reserve, which occupies the east and central areas of the region.
Once close to the Moremi, everywhere you drive provides potential game sightings, so be sure to keep a look out for Elephants just around the corner or Wild Dogs zipping past you.

Days 3 - 5

You will be in the Moremi for four nights, stopping at designated camp sites each evening for a few drinks around the fire, dinner by "braai", and a chance to swap stories about the day's sightings whilst you listen to Africa's nightlife.
Game viewing in the Moremi is excellent and you can expect to see Elephant, Lion, Buffalo, and Leopard and all host of herbivores. During the flood season, the birding is spectacular and possibly the best in the world.
Whilst in Savute, it is not unusual to have Elephants in your camp by day or Lions by night.

Days 7 & 8

From Moremi Game Reserve, you will make your way into the Chobe National Park to a place called Savute.
Savute is one of the most sought out wildlife destinations in Africa and is famous for many great sightings and wildlife documentaries.
Savute is a place of intrigue as it has a river channel that seemingly flows according to its own rhythm. It flows for years at a time and then not for decades. When it does flow, it floods into a marsh attracting animals to the lush grass from the surrounds. When the channel is dry, life becomes more desperate in the bush opening up the possibilities of once in a life time sightings as animals battle for survival in the harsh winter climate. Savute will not disappoint from a wild life perspective and be sure to look out for Lions and Leopards, or even nocturnal animals such as Serval, which are often seen in the marsh during daylight hours

Days 8 & 9

From Savute, we will drive up to the Chobe River, the northern border of the Chobe National Park. Your last night will be in a camp site called Ihaha on the Chobe River. The journey is about 4-6 hours from Savute so it will be an early start and a long day of driving.
At the end of your journey, you will be greeted by one of the most important water sources in Southern Africa, the mighty Chobe River. In the dry season animals converge on the river front literally in their thousands and predators are never far behind. This area is particularly game rich and picturesque. The driving in this region of the park is easy and will provide a welcome break after some difficult (fun) 4x4 driving in the previous days.

Days 10 & 11

On the morning of Day 10, we will drive out of the Chobe into a town called Kasane. Your accommodation for the last night will be at the Chobe Safari Lodge and will feel like extreme luxury after 8 nights in a tent. Whilst at Chobe Safari Lodge, the trip will end with a cruise down the mighty Chobe River and as the sun sets you can reflect on your previous 9 Days.
Apart from the River Cruise, the time at Chobe Safari Lodge is yours. You can relax by the pool, go on more game drives if you are not yet sick of lions. The trip will officially end with one night at the Chobe Safari Lodge, after which you will fly back to South Africa.
However, if you want to spend more time in Kasane, this can be arranged and is highly recommended as it will enable you to do a day trip to Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls, which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
